The most recent addition to the bookshelf and review this time around is a book from the early 2000’s. One of my Christmas presents to add into my bookshelf and career development. It’s a book that is actually relatively old in nature, but I found this one after I started to study for the CSPO.
I got a new job starting at the end of 2021, and I regained some time from the commute. I started to study for the CSPO again, after failing it twice in the early part of 2021. One of the study articles listed this book, “extreme programming explained”, as a major influence for practices and influences of Scrum. Well, with nothing better on my Christmas list and a cheap one on eBay…figured why not?

The book itself was a cool read. I say this seriously because alot of the values here that are written stand the test of time with software development. It’s interesting that even in the early start of the 2000’s there was a group of people who wanted to improve the process of software development.
As I was reading the book, I kept reminding myself that the book was written almost 20years ago, and in the age of technology that’s a forever leap. So, to hear that design constraints, iteration, the need for pair programming, sprints, an open work environment, and SNACKS are all key pieces of success for software development.
I would recommend this book to anyone who works within their company and closely related to product, or software engineering. It’s written to connect cross functional teams to encourage good principles across the organization. It’s a helpful book if you are looking to understand what each team needs to succeed, and how to really talk each other’s language as far as development time, trade-offs, and best practices. It’s also helpful in my opinion when taking a look at implementing scrum and sprints within your groups to the extreme.
