GRIT by Angela Duckworth was an interesting read. Culminating her years of research on the study of GRIT that she presented at a TED Talk that maybe you might know her from (check it out here). I think I stumbled upon that video some years ago. Needless to say the book’s title and her research defines most of the book, however, this gives a great explanation for her background and context to all experiments and experiences.
Much of the book deals with experiment and survey results with who she spoke with to understand what makes someone really gritty. She delves into different influences that might create a gritty person, such as different parenting tactics, and that you don’t have to work 100+ weeks to be gritty. There are far more factors, but those who are gritty tend to succeed and out-perform those, naturally. However, the hours and effort that those who do out-perform end up putting in hours and hours of work, because they want too.
One last sentiment of the book described how some professional athletes, aspiring singers, or even professors didn’t end up finding their passion until much later in life. So it’s okay that you might not know what you are good at, if you even like what you are doing now, because that ultimately helps you find what you’ll end up loving the most.
Overall it’s an interesting read to hear about some of the findings of her results from parents, to West Point cadets, and her students. You can purchase this book on my eBay site here!
