Thoughts
Man this review is going against everything, Keep Sharp has taught me since I read it. As I write this review it’s too late during the week, sleep has been poor, energy levels low, and exercising has been tough. It hasn’t been the best week to keep my brain mentally sharp.
What I learned is that the three foundations that I lived on before reading this book remain true for good brain health; sleep, nutrition, and exercise. It was a good reaffirmation to know some choices of that I have been making for most of my life were correct in their assumption to some positive health benefits.
Additionally Sanjay includes a quick 12 step guide to help anyone start making better brain healthy choices today. There’s a alot of great videos, quizzes, materials, studies, real life experiences, and articles referenced in this book, only to say that we still don’t know much about the brain.
One of the other topics covered in this book besides basic general knowledge about diseases and brain health, deals with the aging population and taking care of an older relative. This is what originally sparked my interest in the topic and led me to this book. He covers this topic over a whole chapter and it hits close to home through every example and story. He provides more resources and things to prepare anyone for dealing with someone “losing their memory”.
Target Audience
I think everyone should grab a copy of this book. Sanjay himself talks about how much we still don’t know about the brain and how useful this can be for anyone with an aging relative, wants to better themselves into their old age, or who might have an interest to understand how the mind actually works. (Hint we still don’t know much)
Takeaway
Sanjay Gupta references a couple of pieces of media and videos throughout the book. He mentions two videos below that still live on YouTube. One talking about what makes a person happy. The context of this video relates to the effects of stress on the body and brain.
The second video below is Sanjay’s inside look at Dementia Village, a community where everyone has dementia. It’s a very Truman like experience, where every staff employee is trained to handle the mentally ill.
If you’re looking to expand your knowledge and keep yourself sharp until the old age of 100, look no further. Sanjay provides great insight, amazing stories of those who are outliers of certain diseases, and a helpful guide to help anyone start making changes today.
