Forever Strong

Thoughts

So I heard about this book I think when it came out, because I remember hearing a lot of buzz on the internet about it. There were suggested videos, bodybuilders talking about it, and I do remember seeing Dr. Lyon’s face everywhere for a minute. Regardless, I didn’t get the book until now. Better late than never.

Her approach is pretty straight forward, prioritize protein. While I am extremely dumbing it down, that’s a major theme, but her approach is conscious of real people, with jobs, habits, behaviors, and excuses. Many books always tell you the science and what you should be doing. They throw in data figures and facts. Talk down about one diet, and talk about benefits of the other. The Lyon protocol was easy to follow, and really is about making dietary and behavioral changes.

Her book was tailored for anyone looking to get started and an approach that she developed herself through experience, That’s something where many books miss the mark. They talk about studies and other science evidence which is absolutely needed, but they lack the evidence that it works in practice. She puts forth the protein first method and makes a good argument for it which is hard to disagree with. Now she also takes a fair approach and cites some drawbacks, The great part about the Lyon protocol that she establishes means that using protein is used for muscle building and weight loss for most of her clients.

It’s a solid book with good foundation for establishing good dietary habits. Forever strong isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but reinforce good habits and a protein first mindset to conquer muscle building AND weight loss goals. If you are an experienced lifter and into all of the podcasts and other health nutrients of the world not much will come as a surprise. It’s an easy and digest-able read, with enough science to support her claims, and real world evidence to back up her protocol for uses in the real world.
