A monster of a book, big beautiful and concise. Man this is what I think of when it comes to a Godzilla book. Now this wasn’t any normal fictional Godzilla book, as it’s description is that it’s more of a tribute and deep dive into Godzilla’s movie history. So cool to read insights from the making of each movie, a synopsis, and behind the scenes photos. Each page is detailed, so much information is packed into each movie review, and explores the western impact and other influences in different forms of media.
I was never that hardcore into Godzilla growing up, I just knew that I liked him, and whenever he it was playing on TV, or watching the VHS tapes I had 100 times I didn’t turn away. There’s a history of books, movies, and everything else in the universe that I wasn’t aware of so this book kept me engrossed for the hour I sat on the couch to read it.
The photos took me back to when I would play those tapes or rentals from the Hollywood video store at my parent’s house. This monster caught my attention for years. The book itself breaks down each of the eras of Godzilla over his 70 year lifespan, gives some BTS photos, and summary of each movie and impact each one had on the next. The book is big and pictures are perfect to capture each scope of time from the movies era.
This review is definitely biased, I’m a fan. This book gave you some BTS photos and less about the lore, but more a story of the making of Godzilla’s movies. If you were a fan as a kid, or ever interested in learning more, this might be a place to actually start or get caught on on all things Godzilla, until the next movie!
